JC Penney Takes a Closer Look at its Mailing
and Shipping Operations
Situation
Working on adding efficiencies to its business, JC Penney is focusing
attention on an important support function for its retail business-mailing
and shipping. With approximately 1,400 mailing/shipping locations,
the retailing conglomerate is one of the nation's largest users
of mailing and shipping services.
According to Purchasing Agent David Radford, over- or under-equipping
in any one of its facilities can result in unnecessary costs or
reduced effectiveness. "There was a growing concern," Radford says,
"that in some local mailing and shipping facilities we were being
oversold and that our vendor might be specifying the wrong equipment
for local needs." He notes, "There appeared to be a lot of room
for improvement. What we really wanted was a hands-on, consultative
partner who would help us understand what equipment capabilities
we really needed."
