Making It Happen (cont'd)
Solutions Through System Integration and Speed
As far as system integration with other shipping operation hardware
devices is concerned, the Neopost/ASAM system was flexible in terms
of connecting to vendors I/O controllers so that it could
interpret the data it received from those devices. And to increase
communication speeds, Neopost/ASAM simply increased the system communication
speed from 9600 to 19200 baud between the shipping manifest system
and all hardware devices it needed to communicate with.
To speed up communication and processing with the Imtec print-and-apply
system, Neopost/ASAM added a separate PC to store each upcoming
package label image in memory.
As a result, the Zebra printer can now provide a label instantly,
since the label image is stored in the attached PC. This, combined
with an increase in baud transmission speeds, according to Briggs,
allows the Imtec setup to print and apply a label at a rate of up
to 30 packages a minute -- considerably faster than the previous
manual procedure.
