With the client's past tax-form mailings, each W-2 was sent in a separate envelope, even when multiple forms were being sent to the same person. But with the Neopost equipment, Fischer said, "we saved our customer a tremendous amount of money on inserting and postage costs. Otherwise they would have been charged for inserting and postage on each and every one of those pieces."

The Neopost equipment's accuracy also helped save time. It is estimated that L&D's use of the VersaMailer cut down the processing time on the W-2 job by 1,000 man-hours.

"I was amazed at the dependability of the optical reader itself," Fischer said. "At the beginning of the project, we had one person whose sole job was to open the envelopes and check that the right W-2s were in each one. We simply could not find a single error. For an inserter to run that many pieces and make no mistakes is pretty amazing."

In fact, the payroll-processing company was so impressed with the power of the VersaMailer that the four area branch offices plan on working again with L&D on their next W-2 project. In addition, other branches of the payroll company elsewhere in the country have bought VersaMailers for themselves, based on L&D's success in Indiana.
